Ms. Mack's classroom

From the moment I arrived the classroom was buzzing with activity on this Friday before Xmas vacation. Ms. Mack had little assignments for me like making 26 goody bags for her children. Each one had a candy cane, pencil, pencil sharpener, note pad, chocolate kisses, a stamp pad, and peanut butter cups. Also i was tasked with a 6 page stapling hw assignment. The main event was cookshop! and I was the kitchen help. We were making bean burritos, with a special curriculum by the DOE.
I washed the lettuce and pepper while ms. Mack instructed the proper way to hold the plastic knives, and elicited descriptions of tastes, smells, and stories.
Each student received a plastic cutting board and the class followed directions while eagerly awaiting the finished burritos, which were eaten with relish (and salsa)
Then came my homemade chocolate chip cookies, which I put in bags for each one to take home.
Then cleanup! Yes each plastic cutting board and everything we used had to be washed, dried, and stored until next time.
After the students were dismissed, we re-arranged
all the tables and chairs to make room for one more new student for Ms. Mack.
Too busy to take pix, so use your imagination.
Fell asleep on bus home, but left my nice white hat on bus.
Enjoyed some rice and beans and a chicken burrito
With George.

Open Houses (apartments abound) in Riverdale

So with a little help from the nytimes real estate app for my iphone, I quickly found 7 open houses to visit on Sunday from 11:30 am until 3pm

This is a challenging endeavor, and we're just not sure if it pays to buy.....(prices are lower than they've been in 6 years) or just keep renting.  ???

It's really amazing that all the price histories are online, so there's no SECRETS anymore......

Stand for freedom at UN

Met up with a big voting rights rally called by NAACP& others today listening & Watching big screen!
"We are the leaders we have been waiting for!"
"Occupy the voting booth"

Senator chuck showed up saying he had biked from Brooklyn!

My favorite quote was from a Muslim Imam- "we've heard a lot from some that want to take back America.... To a time when voters paid poll taxes.... We want to take America forward!!!"
Saw friends from Vets 4 Peace

And also saw Cheryl and little Lucy!! Braving the cold
To champion the rights of voters! And immigrants.

After the rally I walked over to grand central where thousands flocked to the apple store...and thousands of Santa's helpers swarmed the city.

Finished the day with a documentary movie downtown - free showing about the horrendous disaster in 1984 in Bhopal India http://www.bhopalithemovie
One man on the left was in the movie because he is a survivor of Bhopal, because his sister wrapped him in a blanket and ran from the explosion. His parents and 5 siblings died.

Quite a busy activist day in NYC.

Happy Thanksgiving

November 2011

Happy Thanksgiving
 Seasonal Greetings
From Susan and George McAnanama

Writing this letter has been helpful in sorting out our feelings, emotions, joys and sorrows.   Because we love all of you, we are able to share our profound thanks for a year of challenges and changes.
Recapping the year’s events is too complicated, so we just say thanks for –
* Reid Allingham McAnanama, who will celebrate one year of life this November 21st. ; who is growing wonderfully with the help of his loving parents, Glenn and Karen, extended family, Shelly his caretaker, doctors, nurses; visiting therapists.  You can enjoy an archive of his daily antics and visit him online at http://lilmanbigcity.tumblr.com/
* Maureen and Dennis Connelly, celebrating their marriage in July, surrounded by family & friends, joining their lives forever.   We love being close by to meet spontaneously for dinner, school trips, and sporting events.

* Eileen & Charles Giglia and their family enjoying life in Charlotte NC.  We plan to visit before the end of 2011, to visit Lillian, Casandra, and Christian, and all the pets.  It’s been too long!

We are thankful for old & new friends; Staten Island & Binghamton friends, and a dynamic extended family of sisters & brothers, nieces & nephews, and cousins all around the globe.
We are thankful for the love and friendship of those that died this year.  The circle of life is a mystery.  We miss you granddaughter Avery Rose McAnanama, we would have loved to get to know you, but will treasure you forever.
We will always cherish the memories of others that lived a good long life, but still left us too soon –                         Aunt Seena Cohen; Aunt Kathleen McEntee; Aunt Flossie Oschrin; Leo Malson; Eric Loeb; Arlene Haeseler; Stuart Naismith.  It was our pleasure to know you all.
A new baby in a family is so special, and we congratulate cousins Brian & Megan on the birth of their son Evan Cohen
This thanksgiving we will toast you, all our friends and family. We’ll wish for each of us the courage and will to handle life’s challenges.  We’ll also give thanks for the good folks at Occupy Wall Street, for sparking a movement that puts the needs of the 99% on the front burner of the world. We will give thanks for hardworking folks, and those that are struggling to make ends meet. We are hopeful for a better world, where the profit motive is not the only guiding star, and where prejudice is shunned by all.
We are keeping busy, tying up loose ends in Binghamton, and living in NYC, with all its attractions.
Sue’s blog is at www.mommack.blogspot.com and we are both keeping up with friends and family on facebook.
Have a great Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah, winter solstice, and
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012!

OWS - knit one, crochet too

Today I occupied again due to friend Chris having car trouble. It was a great day for crocheting outdoors, talking to people about life.
Marsha & Karen were sitting & knitting after first being barred from entering park with their chairs. Note in the picture below they have the benches along the perimeter blocked off so you can't sit there!!

After they put up a fuss, they were finally let in if they promised to not hit anyone with their chairs.

Making a scarf. - going home to watch inside job on Netflix.

Giving thanks

Resting after a nice long walk to the Hudson River and back.
Yesterday as I was creating our feast in my challenging kitchen I was thinking about my grandma Dinah who made some memorable meals on holidays and every day in her very tiny kitchen on Brighton 13th street. She died the year Glenn was born, but she was such a positive influence in my early years.

Thanksgiving in the Bronx turned out fine, and watching Reid pivot and crawl was a highlight.
Love my family forever.
