Tour of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine

As a New Yorker who was raised in Brooklyn, then lived on Staten Island, and worked in Manhattan, I rarely ventured beyond 96th St. I once went into the depths of the cavernous basement of St John's for a Dennis Kucinich fundraiser/auction, but that's another story.
I took the highlights tour and it was definitely worth the $5.00 (senior). There were about 10 people on the tour, all from out of town, and only 2 others from the states. While I was waiting for the tour, I enjoyed the tranquility of peace park adjacent with its magnificent bronze 40 ft high fountain, 120 delightful children's animal sculptures, and of course open space for sitting.

When you visit, don't miss the Seven Generations sculpture by Frederick Franck, a haunting reminder of our need to care for the Earth now and for future generations.

Definitely take the tour! You can read all about the doors, the soaring stained glass windows, the

monumental 55 feet high columns, and the 168 ft.

high Guastavino dome
ceiling, but the guide did a great job sharing anecdotes, symbolism, and the back story. This cathedral is spectacular in its size, its architecture, its art, and its mission. They were readying the main hall for an upcoming 6 month exhibition all relating to our precious resource - WATER! I will definitely be back for that, and also might even think about going to their famous Winter Solstice or New Years Eve concert

Location:West 112th and Amsterdam NYC
